How to Fix an Appliance Garage Door?

Not many homeowners, including you, want to feel overwhelmed with a cluttered kitchen, which is perhaps why you’ve installed an appliance garage door.

Even though appliance garages are a great and convenient way to save valuable counter space by storing away appliances, there are several issues that can occur with their overall mechanism, some that can be fixed yourself, and others requiring professional help.

How to Fix an Appliance Garage Door?

Adjusting an Appliance Garage Door

There may be several instances where your appliance garage door may come out of its original adjustment, resulting in it not closing completely.

Making the necessary adjustments is pretty much a straightforward task, as long as you have the right tools and a little bit of expertise.

Things you will need:

  •       A screwdriver
  •       Parts
  •       Sandpaper

You can hire a professional in your area to come home and make the adjustments and perform any other repair on your appliance door.

But make sure that the person is qualified for the job, and has a valid handyman insurance policy that’s valid in your state.

  1. To get started, you first need to remove everything from your appliance garage.
  2. Next, grab a screwdriver, and remove the screws of the appliance garage to detach it from the wall, and place it on a flat surface.
  3. Turn the appliance garage door upside down, and locate the spring-loaded roller that is generally located towards the top of the door.
  4. If the appliance door hasn’t been closing completely, then it’s mostly due to a tension issue, so pull the appliance door all the way up, and take a closer look at the track.

Check for areas on the track that have been detached partially from the frame, and remove food other dirt or debris that may be stuck in the track.

  1. With the sandpaper, gently sand any rough spots on the track, and then open and shut the door to see if the problem is fixed.
  2. Adjust the spring tension by loosening the screw and turning the bushing. Lastly, tighten the screw, and try to see if the door is shutting all the down.

How to Fix an Appliance Garage Door with Damaged or Separated Slats?

If the slats of your appliance garage door are damaged or separated, then the door will have to be removed.

Start by rolling the door all the way up, and inspect the left and right door guides for screws and rivets, and detach them.

After you remove the screws and/or rivets, the appliance door should come off easily.

You will now have to put in some elbow grease to sand or cut the fabric material at the rear of the slats that need to be repaired.

If the slats are broken, remove them completely, and replace them with new ones. You will have to apply new fabric to secure the new and old slats together.

Any high-quality, flexible fabric should do the trick, but most people use a canvas material that is white in color and similar to denim.

To apply the fabric to the appliance door, you can do it with glue or a heat seal—both of which are commonly available at most local hardware stores.

Now that the slats of the door are fixed, you can reassemble it on the track, reinstall the screws, and check whether it’s opening and closing properly and that there are no gaps in the slats.

Final Thoughts

Appliances garage doors are great additions to big and small kitchens and are a great way to declutter your space.

However, just like anything in your home, there’s a lot that can go wrong with your appliance garage door.

Most of the issues with your appliance garage doors can be fixed if you’re handy with tools.

If the slats are damaged, you will have to buy new ones first, and then replace them.

You will also need to buy some high-strength fabric to bind the slats together.

Sometimes the door of your appliance garage door may not shut down completely or may pop open after shutting down, for which you will have to remove it from the cabinet and inspect the tracks and guides for damage.
